Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration: Vistas Project |
« back |
REA completed a two-year study of the Lake Coastal Waters Project, a partnership with schools in the Lake Coastal Waters of northern Indiana funded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Science classes in five schools participated in a community-centered science inquiry, exploring environmental issues on the northern edge of Lake Michigan. Students investigated specific problems, and, based on their research, offered viable solutions to enhance the ecology of the lake coastal area. The participating middle and high school students became concerned with ecological issues, better informed about their local environments, and internalized academic science content.
REA also completed a study of the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC)/Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) Career Development Project, an initiative that engaged students in four Indianapolis Middle Schools in career inquiry and exploration. The in-school program incorporated multiple technologies, career panels, a college visit, and in-depth research. Pre/post survey data showed a statistically significant increase in the number of students who had talked to professionals in their career areas of interest, as well as gains in students' knowledge of course requirements and the number of students considering post-secondary education. The post-data also show students' growing recognition of the career support networks available in their families and teachers.
