Alex Gurn, Ph.D.

Alex has over eight years of experience conducting applied educational research with school leaders, teachers, and young people in and out of schools. He has taught English language arts and English as a second language in public schools, as well as college courses in teacher education, qualitative research design, and sociology. Alex served two years as an education specialist at the Massachusetts Department of Education, where he conducted external evaluation of after-school and out-of-school time programs. Alex earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction from Boston College, where he studied educational change, literacy development, and critical theory. He has co-authored book chapters on ‘uplifting leadership’ and data-informed decision making. Alex’s dissertation examined the role of corporate philanthropy in urban education. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring the Bay Area and learning through play with his daughter.
